Is it valid to pursue two degrees simultaneously?

“Can I do two master’s degree courses together from two different govt universities, one regular and other through correspondence under UGC rules?”

This is a common question that our readers ask us often. There are may who want to add value to their CV and save an academic year by pursuing two degrees simultaneously.

The recent notification by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has almost every student in India worried and confused. UGC, in its January 2016 order, has evinced that it does not endorse the idea of allowing students to pursue two degrees simultaneously.

There were lots of debates and articles about this issue that UGC had been sought many queries about pursuing the double degree, so it had to issue a public notification to clear the mist.

To be very honest, the answer is – yes, you can pursue two different degrees at the same time, you cannot use them BOTH as qualification while you apply for a job, and if they find you with two degrees at the same time they can legitimately throw you for cheating the system, as if you pursue two degrees simultaneously, one of these becomes inauthentic naturally. You can pursue additional course in some cases

While there has been a lot of interest to pursue two or more degree programmes simultaneously to help students improve their knowledge, skill and employ-ability, the present UGC guidelines are silent about the pursuit of a certificate/diploma course alongside a degree programme.

Giving in to long-standing demands from universities and students, the apex higher education regulator, at a meeting on July 31,2013 had decided to accept its expert panel’s recommendations on permitting pursuit of an additional degree programme.

The committee suggested that a student enrolled in a degree programme under regular mode may be allowed to pursue a maximum of one additional degree programme simultaneously under open/distance mode from the same or a different university.

Another suggestion was to allow students pursuing a degree programme under regular mode to pursue a maximum of one certificate/diploma/advanced diploma/PG diploma programme simultaneously either in regular or open and distance mode in the same university or from other institutions.

There are many issues that you can face, like you cannot pursue same course from two different university, or if both need you to attend classes or weekend workshops at their campus. It is legal to pursue both simultaneously AS LONG AS YOU are following the eligibility criteria of both Universities. Though it is legally allowed some universities may have some problems. So it’s better to contact your current university or UGC regarding this issue.
